League of Women Voters of Florida Education Fund “Be Ready to Vote” Tag Campaign

There will be three elections in 2012: Are you ready?! In anticipation of the 2012 election season, the League of Women Voters of Florida recently launched a new "Be Ready to Vote" smartphone campaign to make voting more convenient and accessible for all Florida citizens. The joint project between the League and Microsoft is the first statewide voter outreach effort of its kind in the country using the Microsoft Tag technology.

The "Be Ready to Vote" Tag campaign connects Florida citizens to their local Supervisor of Elections using new Microsoft Tag smartphone technology. Microsoft Tag is a 2D barcode that can be scanned and read by any smartphone equipped with a camera. Once the Tag is scanned, users can connect to their local Supervisor of Elections one of three ways: via phone, email or website. Voters can then verify their voter status and make sure their registration information is current and complete. The League and Microsoft are offering the program on a voluntary basis to any of Florida’s 67 Supervisors of Elections. There is no cost to participate.

The League and Microsoft have partnered to design county-specific Tag designs for Supervisors to market within their county jurisdictions. At the same time, the League is promoting its own statewide “Be Ready to Vote” Tag campaign for easy usage by any Florida citizen, anywhere in the state. The League encourages voters to update their address, update their name, review their signature on file and renew their mail-in ballot request. A path to register for first-time voters is also offered.

Responses to the campaign have been enthusiastic. “I commend the League and Microsoft for making this program available to all our 67 Florida Supervisors of Elections,” FSASE President-Elect and Martin County Supervisor of Elections Vicki Davis said. “With one scan of the Be Ready Tag,, any Florida voter can be connected with their Supervisor of Elections’ via phone line, email or Web.”

“By definition we are a very mobile society,” Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher said. “When we move, we send in address changes for our magazine subscriptions, our banks, etc., but how often do you notify your county Supervisor of Elections? We are all guilty.”

The elections calendar hosts three elections in 2012: the Presidential Preference Primary on January 31, the Florida Primary on August 14 and the General Election on November 6. Citizens must be registered to vote at least 29 days prior to each Election Day. Therefore, it is critical that Florida citizens have convenient access to voter registration resources.

“The laws in Florida have changed as a result of the 2011 Legislative Session,” LWVF Voter Services Chair Charley Williams said. “The League reminds all Floridians to get their voter house in order before the end of this year. The registration deadline for Florida’s next election is right around the corner on January 3, 2012. That’s right after the New Year’s holiday. Don’t be left out.”

Whether it is an address change, a name change or an update to their signature, getting citizens in touch with their local Supervisors of Elections is the goal of “Be Ready to Vote.” It’s democracy made easy!

Although Volusia County has not yet moved on this project, the use of the tag will connect the user to the state website with information on the Volusia County of Elections office.
