LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF VOLUSIA COUNTY
LWVVC LOCAL STUDY COMMITTEE
7/18/06
NOTES
FROM 1ST MEETING - CONTINUATION OF LOCAL STUDY, LWVVC - Comprehensive Growth
Management Plan, Volusia County - 3rd Year of Study
The meeting was held on Monday, July 17th, 2006 from 5:15 to 6 p.m. with the
following members in attendance: Rosemarie Gore, Summer Clayton, Larry
Moore, Sandy Horikami and Jean Snyder. The meeting was held at the
Student Center Annex, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The committee reviewed which meetings they had respectively been observing,
attending or participating in over the last 6 months, and as chair I'm proud to
say just how very involved and enlightened our committee members are (excluding
the chair). This indepth knowledge of the players, the events that have
lead the Charter Review Commission, respective cities, the county council and
the CRC's sub-committee -- is really helping in best understanding the
underlying reasons for the issues at hand.
The main emphasis at this meeting was to begin to address those issues we need
to investigate further - those issues we take "issue" with -- and
those League issues we want to stand firm on as we develop this third year's
work. We ultimately want to develop additional LWVVC Program statements
so that local league may continue to speak out, inform the public,
and work to change those policies we see as threatening to our future,
(with the backing of good study to help us stand firm in our convictions).
The issues brought up by the committee include:
THE PROPOSED PLANNING DISTRICTS - ARE THEY A MISTAKE?
THE COUNTY DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE EXERCISING ITS POWER.
SMART GROWTH - BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
WE DO NOT WANT TO JEOPARDIZE OUR WATER
WE RECOGNIZE THAT THE AREA IS STILL GEARED TO DEVELOP -- WHERE DO WE STAND?
WE WANT TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL CORRIDOR (CORE)
WE WANT TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER THE GROWTH MANAGEMENT COMMISSION -- FEEL DISPUTE
RESOLUTION MUST BE BINDING
HOW DO WE WANT TO SPEAK ON HOME RULE?
WE WANT TO LOOK AT HOW CITIES ARE GROWING AND THE ZONING ISSUES THAT MAY CHANGE
THINGS
Now, I need you all to review these issues and suggest any changes or
corrections or embellishments needed. Remember - when we go to meetings,
read the paper, or just have "Ah Ha! Moments, write them down, send out an
e-mail to the committee -- let's talk about it BEFORE we meet again in
September.
Sincerely,
Jean Snyder, study chair
